6- 7 PM:  What is a tax sale over bid? Learns ins outs of this business model from Mark Potter


A tax sale over bid is the amount paid in excess of the taxes for a property that is sold at a tax sale auction.  For example:  If a property is being sold at a tax sale auction and the taxes owed on that property is $2000 and the property sells at auction for $50,000, the over bid amount is $48,000. 

If the delinquent property owner loses the property through the tax sale, then the delinquent owner is entitled to the over bid amount.  If the delinquent owner doesn’t claim the over bid amount within the allotted time allowed by the state, then the over bid amount ($48,000) goes to the taxing authority, usually the county. 

People usually don’t know they are owed the over bid amounts.  The taxing authority only has a minimum requirement to send one letter to the previous owner, and it is usually sent to the previous address.  Well the previous owner is not at the previous address and unless the previous owner has provided a forwarding address to the post office, they will not receive the information that the tax sale over bid is due them.
